Spring 2011 Community Programs Descriptions

Circuit Training – Enjoy a great workout using a variety of equipment. Circuit training includes cardio intervals between muscle strengthening exercises. It is a completely balanced workout that can be done at any age or fitness level and is a great calorie burner while toning your body! Taught by Courtenay Recreation Instructor.

Mondays or Wednesdays April 18-May 25 from 5:15-6:15 cost $45 in the Fitness Room

Pilates – This class is modified to your fitness level and builds strength, flexibility, coordination, balance plus feels good to do! We will focus on creating ‘core’ strength, organizing the key muscles that support the spine, increasing ease and range of movement, giving you the power to stand up to gravity. Taught by Courtenay Recreation Instructor.

Wednesdays April 20-May 25 from 5:30-6:45 cost $48 in the Drama Room

Yoga – A set series of poses coordinated with your breath creates a strong cardiovascular workout well suited for men and women. The faster pace warms you up, detoxifying the body, toning muscles, increasing range of motion and releasing stress. All poses will be individually modified to ensure a safe and beneficial practice. Taught by Courtenay Recreation Instructor.

Wednesdays April 20-May 25 from 7:00-8:15 or Thursdays April 21-May 26 from 6:15-7:30 cost $48 in the Drama Room

Women’s Creative Writing – Do you like to journal, write stories or poetry? Would you like to share the unique experiences of your life? Join us for an opportunity to meet and write with creative women of all ages and abilities, in a supportive and caring atmosphere. Ages 16 + Thursdays April 14-May 12 from 6:30-8:00 cost $25 in the Library

Suzanne Camp is the SD 71 District Cultural Resource person for Aboriginal Education Services. “We all have stories within us and I find the Creative Writing Process to be one way to look at those stories. I facilitated this kind of workshop at the Wachiay Friendship Center in 2009 and by the end of it we were reluctant to see it end. I have several methods to start the creative process of writing, but I believe it should be interactive and participant driven. In essence, we all become the teacher in this kind of community gathering.”

Nest Box Building – This is a workshop to create wooden nest boxes for a variety of species of birds whose natural habitat is being reduced by development or competition from non-native birds. Boxes will be mounted in the watershed later in the year. Builders will be encouraged to put identifying marks on their nest box so that they can follow their success. Children welcome with adult supervision. May 14 from 1:30-4:00 cost: FREE meet in room 101 at Lake Trail School – pre-register!

Ian Moul is a biologist who administers the wildlife tree registry for BC and is familiar with the needs of the birds being helped. He is also a builder that lives in the Comox Valley and is aware of the demands our climate puts on wood products and how to mitigate rain and snow impacts to make nest boxes more attractive and functional for the birds.

Gathering Girls – Come hang out with friends, or meet new people. There will be music, snacks, baking, art, beading, outside games and activities, sports, movies, clothing swap, mural making, manicures…What do you want to do? Have fun! Ages 12-16. Thursdays from 3:30-5:30 meet in Room 101

Emily Graydon is a snowboard coach for the First Nations Snowboard team and program support worker for an aboriginal ECE program. Jasmine Hart has a diploma in Women’s Studies and is working at the Wachiay Friendship Centre with the Raven Back youth program.
