Plugin highlight: Updraft Plus – Backup/Restore
Updraft Plus is our go-to pro plugin to backup, migrate, and restore sites. Hacking, server crashes, dodgy updates, or simple user error can ruin your WordPress site. Having a reliable backup plugin can mean the difference between having a site, and having to completely remake your site from scratch.
What is a backup?
Simply put, a website backup is a copy of all of your website data. The backup can include a backup of the database, plugins, themes, uploads, and more. With your website’s backup, you can clone or restore your site to the point of the last backup. If something goes wrong such as a hack or a bad update, your site can be restored to the last backup point. As a rule we at Pod Creative backup all files, and we recommend you do too!
Set a schedule!
One feature of Updraft Plus we absolutely adore is the ability to schedule your backups. Depending on the size of the site and the amount of new information that is added, we range from daily to monthly backups for our scheduled backups. The best part? If you decide to do a one-off backup, such as before a large website update or after the addition of an important post, you can simply perform a backup! One-off backups can be performed at any time, even the day before a scheduled backup.
Choose your preferred remote storage!
As avid users of Google Drive, we LOVE the fact that we can use Google Drive as our remote storage option. All of our backups are remotely stored safely offsite and away from any horrors that may befall our office such as power outages, freak storms, or that tree that’s above my skylight… At any time the backup can be downloaded from the remote backup and restored if needed. Remote storage options include Google Drive, Email, Dropbox, Backblaze, and more!
UpdraftPlus can be used as a free or paid for plugin. To access all features such as migration, UpdraftPlus vault, or restore a backup from another plugin, check out UpdraftPlus Premium!
Depending on the site, some of our sites are created on a development space and then moved to a live domain. Before we discovered UpdraftPlus’ Premium Migrator it was a long, tedious process of moving a site from its development hosting space to its live hosting space. This staging required creating a backup, downloading said backup, then uploading the backup to the live hosting space. Sometimes this could take two or three tries depending on the size of the site. If you’re like us, and have ever experienced the heartbreak of your newly re-developed site being lost and/or corrupted during the copying and migrating stage while doing it by hand, you will greatly appreciate this feature.
With UpdraftPlus Migrator the process is straightforward! Not only is the service reliable, but it is also quick to boot! Needless to say, we at Pod Creative are HUGE fans of this functionality. For web-developers, direct site-to-site migration is a game-changer.
What comes with Premium?
For starters, Migrator! But in all seriousness, a lot of extra features are added in to UpdraftPlus Premium. With this single plugin, you’ll get incremental backups, multiple storage destinations, automatic backup before updates, migrator, WP-CLI integration, importer, enhanced reporting, no adverts, fix backup time, more files, more database options, multisite/network, WebDAV, Microsoft OneDrive, SFTP/FTPS/SCP, enhanced support for Dropbox (sub-folders), Rackspace, Cloud Files, Amazon S3 (Standard and Standard – Infrequent Access Storage classes) and Google Drive (sub-folders).
If you decide to renew your UpdraftPlus Premium plugin, those who have purchased the year previous are offered to renew their plugin for a 40% discount! The best part? It’s not a one-time thing either! They’ve offered the same discount since 2013, that’s pretty darn amazing.
Basic UpdraftPlus is free, and in our opinion should be on every single site online! But the Premium version of UpdraftPlus is not, and that includes the migrator. Depending on the number of sites you will connect with your Premium version, there are different tiers of UpdraftPlus Premium. Because we use it on all our sites, we have the Enterprise version which is around $195 USD/year. While not the most expensive paid-for plugin, they sure can add up! However, if your business finds itself migrating a lot of sites, or wishes to use one of the premium backup options, you want to look at this plugin.
We love UpdraftPlus, so much so we install this plugin on every single one of our sites. The functionality is by far the best in the business and has been for a long time. While there is a cost to the UpdraftPlus Premium version, in our minds it is well, well worth the price. The ability to do direct site-to-site migration is unparalleled when it comes to web development.
