Domain Name System

Domain Name System (DNS) is a protocol for how computers send and receive data over the Internet. Its purpose is to turn a user-friendly domain name like podcreative.ca into an Internet Protocol (IP) address like 23.253.70.72.

IP addresses are what computers use to identify each other on the network.

It would be very difficult to remember the IP address of every website we access. Instead, our request is routed through a DNS server, also known as a name server.

The DNS manages a large database of records that map the domain we type into a web browser with its corresponding IP address.
